促肾上腺皮质激素(ACTH)是由脑垂体前叶分泌的多肽激素，作用于肾上腺皮质刺激肾上腺类固醇、醛固酮、皮质醇和肾上腺雄激素的合成和分泌，也是男子重要的糖皮质激素皮质醇的主要的调节者。ACTH是下丘脑-脑垂体-肾上腺轴的重要组成部分，通常是在生物应激反应中产生的。当血中的皮质醇水平增高，脑垂体释放的促肾上腺皮质激素被抑制，相反，脑垂体释放的促肾上腺皮质激素的水平则提高。促肾上腺皮质激素在每天清晨(6:00-8:00)达到峰值，到零时降到最低状态。
