神经节苷脂是酸性鞘糖脂，其在细胞质膜的外部小叶中形成脂筏，特别是在中枢神经系统的神经元细胞中。它们参与细胞增殖、分化、粘附、信号转导、细胞间相互作用、肿瘤发生和转移。神经节苷脂的积累与几种疾病有关，神经节苷脂GM2是神经系统的一个很小的组成部分，但由于溶酶体β-己糖胺酶的遗传缺陷，它在Tay-Sachs和Sandhoff病患者的大脑中积累。
