This topical anesthetic, traditionally used for oral and pharyngeal analgesia¹, also exhibits several mechanisms relevant to neuronal health. It enhances mitochondrial function in neurons, increasing respiratory capacity and providing protection against stressors associated with neurodegenerative disorders². The compound inhibits the aldehyde dehydrogenase isoform ALDH3A1, leading to the accumulation of 4‑hydroxynonenal; in cancer models, this sensitizes head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells to the cystine‑glutamate antiporter inhibitor sulfasalazine³. Notably, it rescues frataxin deficiency in animal models and in buccal cells from patients with Friedreich’s ataxia⁴, suggesting therapeutic potential in mitochondrial neurodegeneration.
