Benzylamine is an aromatic amine used as a building block or intermediate for the production of organic fine chemicals and many pharmaceutical compounds. It can be prepared by the hydrogenation of benzonitrile and reductive amination of benzaldehyde using a metal catalyst. Benzylamine undergoes oxidative deamination reaction catalyzed by benzylamine oxidase and monoamine oxidase B and has been used as a substrate for the MAO-B enzyme. The hydrotropic salt (BzCl) facilitates molecular self-assembly of surfactant SDBS into unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles.
